KPV: an α-MSH C-terminal tripeptide in inflammation research

How the lysine-proline-valine fragment of α-melanocyte stimulating hormone became a barrier-repair reference.

Overview

KPV (Lysine-Proline-Valine) is a synthetic tripeptide matching the C-terminal fragment of α-MSH (residues 11–13). It retains the anti-inflammatory activity of the parent hormone without the melanocortin-receptor pigment effects.

Mechanism

Published preclinical work describes downregulation of NF-κB signaling, mast-cell stabilization, and mucosal-barrier repair in intestinal, dermal, and respiratory models. KPV is commonly studied alongside larazotide and TB-500 in gut-barrier and wound-healing assays.

Notes for the lab

Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water; KPV is water-soluble. Store reconstituted material at 2–8 °C and aliquot for longer-term work. Topical-application protocols typically use lower concentrations than injectable preparations.
