NAD+: a coenzyme central to metabolic and longevity research

Overview

NAD+ (oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme present in every living cell. It carries electrons in central metabolism and acts as substrate for sirtuins, PARPs, and CD38.

Why levels matter in research

Multiple studies report age-related decline in tissue NAD+ pools. Restoring NAD+ via precursors (NMN, NR) or direct supplementation has become a common intervention in aging, mitochondrial-function, and DNA-repair studies.

Notes for the lab

NAD+ in solution is sensitive to pH and temperature; prepare fresh working solutions, protect from light, and assay quickly. Reconstituted material is usually stored short-term at 2–8 °C and aliquoted for longer-term freezer storage.
